6 Show-Stopping Staircases

Our favorite ways to ascend and transcend.

Staircases are the unsung heroes of the household. Not only are they eminently practical in their function, but they offer a unique opportunity to set the design tone for a home, because they're often the first things guests see when they enter through the front door.

There are a number of ways to capitalize on the feature, the most obvious being on the treads and bannisters themselves. Statement sconces and staggered gallery walls also perk up the pathway, drawing the eye upward and adding a pleasing visual flow that connects the different levels of a home. Consider also the transitional wall alongside the staircase, using it as a pretty little staging area for occasional seating, creating an inviting vignette with a spare chair and a floor lamp. Or, if you're feeling a little wacky (we're big proponents of wacky), go big AND go home with a huge-ass channel-tufted statement wall.
